Upon Their Shoulders

African American artist D. Delreverda-Jennings' painted bust for the Visions of Our 44th President Exhibit, entitled, "My Time to "Upon Their Shoulders."

“I created a more traditional treatment. Raised edges along the lapels representative the hulls of the many slave ships that crossed the seas during the ‘Middle Passage.’ Within, figures of enslaved Africans metaphorically encircle the walls of the hold. Upon Their Shoulders pays respect to the millions who came before us, making it possible for one of the most significant historical accomplishments to occur in this nation—the election of the first African American President.”

Born in Alaska, D. DelReverda-Jennings is a mixed-media sculptor of Caribbean Latino and African American descent. Known for creating striking figurative sculptural pieces and a diverse repertoire, she has been exhibited internationally and her work is held in numerous corporate and private collections.
